International media attention has been focused on the Rwandan woman who was given a two-year prison term for indecent dressing.
After sporting a skimpy dress to a concert by well-known French musician Tayc in Kigali on August 9, 2022, Mugabekazi Lilliane, 24, was taken into custody and charged with public indecency.
She was detained after being arrested and kept there while she awaited a court decision.
Following her detention, Faustin Nkusi, a spokeswoman for the prosecution, informed AFP that “she is accused of having committed public indecency.”
Despite the protests, the arrest was supported by members of the Rwandan government, notably the former justice minister Johnston Busingye.
A Rwandan court condemned Lilliane to two years in prison on Thursday, August 18.
